The Three Types of Dental Implants
Dental implants come in three types:
Root form dental implant
Plate form dental implant
Subperiosteal dental implant
About the Root Form Dental Implant
The root form implant is the most common type of dental implant. It matches your tooth's root more closely than the other two types. Like the other types, it can be used to replace one or more teeth. The root form implant is placed directly into your jawbone to replace your missing tooth's root.
About the Plate Form Dental Implant
The plate form dental implant is used when the jawbone is too thin for the placement of a root form implant. Usually, bone grafting is performed to create a thicker jawbone for a root form implant, but there are times when bone grafting cannot be done.
The plate form implant is long and narrow. It is placed in the jawbone to act as a replacement tooth's root.
Abut the Subperiosteal Dental Implant
The subperiosteal implant is used when the jawbone cannot securely hold the root form or plate form dental implants. This implant is placed on top of the jawbone and under the gum tissue. It is a long metal plate that is sturdy enough to hold dental crowns for tooth replacement.
All three dental implant types are strong, durable, and functional. They act like your natural teeth's roots and can withstand the same amount of pressure when you chew and speak.
